Essentials and empirical findings in teacher education and professional development

Video has become an important tool in teacher education and professional development. Beyond its use as intervention medium, video is regarded as powerful tool to support curricula and content of teacher education programs. It also allows to identify rules and routines of daily teaching which help to illustrate instructional concepts. In this article, essentials and approaches of video-based research are illustrates from an educational perspective. Then, theoretical strands and didactical aspects are presented. With regard to two studies from initial teacher education and professional development empirical findings are presented that emphasize the relevance of a systematic use of video for novice and expert teachers.
