This paper explores the historical background and current challenges of Islamic Religious Education in Hungary within the broader framework of Hungarian Religious Education. It shows that, although Islam has a long history in the country, contemporary Islamic Religious Education remains largely community-based rather than school-based. Although legal provisions allow Religious Education in state schools, yet Muslim communities can rarely use this opportunity because of their limited resources, scattered student populations, and a lack of trained teachers. For these reasons, mosques and weekend schools play a central role in fostering Islamic knowledge and identity. Overall, the study presents Islamic religious education in Hungary as a small but developing field shaped by historical legacy, minority status, and ongoing institutional adaptation.
