Religious controversies are a constitutive feature of super-diverse school contexts in liberal democracies. They emerge not only in debates on geopolitical or scientific issues, but also in everyday school practices such as the use of religious symbols, prayer, or sex education, and thus confront schools with the task of mediating between ideological neutrality, religious needs and commitment to liberal-democratic values.
This special issue explores how such controversies can be understood and addressed in educational contexts by bringing together theoretical reflection, empirical insight, and didactical perspectives. The aim is to consolidate and systematise the aforementioned interdisciplinary perspectives on religion-related controversies and to integrate them into an international field of research.
